COM 495 – Communication Theory & Vietnam
11am – 11:50am
LH 141
Dr. McKinney
Registration Link for F2F Participation - https://calendly.com/comstudiesweek/com-studies-week-com-theory-vietnam
Brief description of course: The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the Vietnam War and the experience of the Americans who served in Vietnam (both men and women). They had to select a book by a Vietnam veteran and analyze that individual’s experience using three communication theories from ones presented in class (e.g., Social Exchange Theory, Dialectical Theory, Uncertainty Reduction Theory, etc.). They have to write three short papers and one long paper about what they have read.
On the day students will be visiting, they will see students lead a class discussion on the book they chose for the semester. The purpose of this is for the students tell us "what they learned" about the individual they read about and how a communication theory applied to this book helped them further understand this individual's experience in Vietnam, and the Vietnam War.

COM 473 – Consulting Training & Development
12pm – 12:50pm
LH 134
Dr Weber
I will be having an assignment in which the 473 students must develop a 2-to-3-minute teaching parable. A “teaching parable” is a brief story that can pertain to any one of a number of training topics (e.g., leadership, team comm., conflict management, you name it). The idea is that as a trainer, you have a parable (ideally, several) in your “hip pocket,” ready to use to respond to questions, illustrate a key point, that sort of thing, sort of a one-size-fits-all kind of story. So I was thinking of having a teaching parable contest, with the 473 students voting in round one for the top three “best parables,” based on parable content plus delivery during class.
